FIRST PEACE, CND, BADGE ERIC AUSTEN by GeaAusten  First Cnd Badges Eric Austen By Geaausten-d1qlb3d by GeaAustenThe first badges were made by my father, Eric Austen of Kensington CND using white clay with the symbol painted black. Again there was a conscious symbolism. They were distributed with a note explaining that in the event of a nuclear war, these fired pottery badges would be among the few human artifacts to survive the nuclear inferno” …

“”we moved back to London from Weymouth , Dulwich to begin with when I was about 2 , and then to Sydney Street in Chelsea and 6 COTTAGE PLACE, opposite the then Brompton Oratory
by then I was five , my father was a teacher and had been to Highgate Art School [he worked as a fireman during the war in London, ]

he made pottery by hand and always used black and white,

I can remember having long arguments with him over this..as I loved colour, though he did use terracotta clay,

I was a child prodigy [or so my parents said] and I have acutely accurate memories of all of this time, I started ballet lessons when I was three,

because of my fathers beliefs he was one of the founders of the original Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament,FIRST ALDERMASTON MARCH 2b by GeaAusten

all I remember was sitting in our dining room at cottage place discussing the designs on paper which my father had drawn for the symbol for peace and helping him chose which one to use , which was then taken to a committee to be agreed on, it is more than likely that there were two or three people involved in this, one being Gerald Holtom,
but the first badges were my fathers idea, he had been making pottery jewellery at home, I used to go with him on the bus to have it fired in a big kiln, he used a makeshift container with his pottery in ,
once it was fired it was safe ,

he sat up until very late hand painting the first badges and meticulously glueing pins on the back, he also painted the banners for the first Aldermaston march

now I can actually remember all of this, very clearly, also the fact that out lives were in danger a couple of years after this and we had to move overnight form chelsea to hampstead,

my father and I had an exceptionally strong bond and for some reason used to confide in me.Photo albumgea 0058hw4u by GeaAusten

so that seems to be a bit more history.. I didn’t mean to write so much !!!

its quite hard,, but the old feel of pencil and watercolour is a true joy,, so for me a new beginning .. Gea”AIR AND WATER 2 by GeaAustenfallen leaves RIP Savita Halappanavar by GeaAustenHummingbird 1 by GeaAusten

……A Faded Rose

© By Anonymous

The rose that once had been so perfect.
Petals pleading to be touched,
fragrant with the most Heavenly bouquet.
This rose, reminiscent of another life,
was found in quiet repose,
pressed between pages of poetry.

No better place for interment
than resting in the loving arms of favored.
sonnets whose lines will recapture her beauty in verse.
The essence of rose and love will ever live on in my heart,
just as the bearer of the rose has all these many years.

This dried, crumpled, lifeless rose is all that remains of our love.
I cannot now resurrect this rose, nor our love,
but for some reason I feel the need to try.
Failures are sometimes second chances.

Gently closing the book that contains my faded rose
and the tangible symbol of our love.
I put upon the shelf all our hopes and dreams
to wait once more for another place,
another time

Gea Austen CND THE BEGINNING AT LAST by GeaAusten ERIC AUSTEN KILLED ?right in the middle of CND .When my father was about 34 , i think the secret services tried 2 kill him. He got a very unusual illness ,which could Not be Diagnosed. He went in2 hospital for 3 months . And they said he was going 2 die . Our family gp came round and told my mum he was going 2 die. All of his norfolk relatives turned up at his bedside . After 3 months in hospital he got better almost overnight. Like a miracle . When he did die at 76 it was from leukeamia , and my mum and close family said it was a follow on from the illness when he was young ? Leukaemia ? Invisible plutonium particle result ? Im certain thinking about it CND SYMBOL,, JOY !!!!I decided to look up the Peace symbols origins on the net and was dismayed to find the whole history is written wrongly !!
“The Direct Action Committee had already planned what was to be the first major anti-nuclear march, from London to Aldermaston, where British nuclear weapons were and still are manufactured. It was on that march, over the 1958 Easter weekend that the symbol first appeared in public. Five hundred cardboard lollipops on sticks were produced. Half were black on white and half white on green. Just as the church’s liturgical colours change over Easter, so the colours were to change, “from Winter to Spring, from Death to Life.” Black and white would be displayed on Good Friday and Saturday, green and white on Easter Sunday and Monday.

I was with my father when he was working on the design,,, the real secret is what it means..
which I know.. AND I know they don’t.. anyway as a bit of a giveaway,,

the design was black and white..

, my father only ever used black and white.

It was infintely simple..

my father told me the best designs had to be kept simple.. my father explained the whole process to me when he designed the sign. my father was an Artist .. Gerald was a draftsman..

. so I am finally going to stick up for my family.

. I know the truth…

they were older than me.. but managed to get an American to write a book about them [the Holtoms] .

. they have done everything in their power to exclude my father,, I am really fed up with it,,
if they had even mentioned him, but they were deternined to make what they could out of it. not anymore .. C.N.D

seems a long time since I managed to persuade Kate Hudson to use my fathers original badge on the CND site.. he actually founded CND and I was with him helping him chose which sign to use,, it was all very dangerous really ,as the secret services never left us alone.. I have done a few designs and it was strange doing them as I could almost sense my father, also I felt like I’d done it before ! which of course I had .. Gea
